Windows Hosting or Linux Hosting?
Should I choose Linux or Windows for my hosting Platform?
Traditionally Linux has been the platform of choice for hosting reliable websites due to the stability of the operating system (OS). With the arrival of Windows Server 2003 OS and the Microsoft Web Server IIS6, Windows website hosting took a giant leap forward and caught up to the reliability of Linux hosting.
The choice between Linux or Windows is now not based upon reliability, but upon the type of website you intend to host. Due to a number of technical reasons, the scripting language PHP runs consistently faster on a Linux platform over a Windows platform. This will change with the next Windows web server IIS7, however for the time being a Linux hosting account should be the preferred option for any PHP driven websites.
If your website is an ASP or .NET application then you must choose the Windows platform as this is not supported on Linux.
Additionally you can host your website on any platform regardless of whether you use Windows, Linux or Macintosh on you own computer. The only decision to make is what scripting technology you wish to use, and if you are unsure of this, then the Microsoft platform supports all available options. (PHP, MySQL, MSSQL, ASP, .NET)
